The EU was created to be borderless, not require passport checks, etc. and to help refugees; however, no one could have predicted that civil wars and terrorism would cause so many people in the Middle East/Northern Africa to flee to the EU.

Greece and Italy are overwhelmed by applications and Hungary has closed it's borders. Germany has been helping the most as well as private families that have seen the need. EU is already struggling economically, so this only adds a burden. Where are they coming from? -Syria (5 year civil war, Islamic State) -Afghanistan (40 year war, unstable gov't, Taliban) -Eritrea (violation of human rights/poverty) -Nigeria (extremism/violence) -Kosovo (poverty and division) -Iraq (war/refugees from Syria) -Sudan (violence/unstable gov't) -Senegal: looking for a better life Periodically throughout the year, you will be presenting a Current Event, a newsworthy story that has happened within the last month, to the class. You will read and analyze the article and answer the questions in complete sentences on the form below. You will print off the article and staple it to the form (DUE the day you present). On your presentation day, you will share briefly (2 min or less) the who, what, where, why, when of the article. You will be graded on: voice clarity, voice volume, posture, and eye contact--so know your article well! Check out this video with a good summary of the conflict. Told from a Jewish perspective so there is some bias, and the state of Israel has not always acted justly or is completely innocent either.
