-Go to weebly.com and log in to your account -Click on the tab that says "Free Write" and click "New Post" Title: Take Ten and Swap -Select 10 Wordly Wise words -Start writing 10 sentences using each word correctly. For those up for a challenge: -Try writing more than 1 word in a sentence. -Try including the 10 words in a story and try to make it make sense. If you get stuck on a word, you can "swap" it with another person, then you must use the word you received in the trade in your story. You may only "swap" ONE of your words; use your wordly wise to help you :) During the writing time, there is a "shark" word being passed around. When it gets passed to you, you must use it in the sentence you are writing at that moment. For example, I could be writing: "The illustrious incident would never be forgotten, because..." and the "shark" word was: vital, I would have to use it in THAT sentence before I could pass it on to the next person. "..I finally learned what was truly vital to survival on this planet." If you end up with the "shark" word at the end of the timed round, you have to include ANOTHER vocab word (of the teacher's choosing) in your story/sentences. Good luck--and watch out for sharks!! -a quote from the book (know the page number as reference)
-accurate details/descriptions -professionalism: check spelling/grammar; images chosen; well-made project with an easy to understand layout; balance is the key. -sells the book Book Reports due this quarter! Holes Reflection and Connection
(completed together in-class) 1. How does the geography of Camp Green Lake/God's Thumb influence life there? Camp Green Lake is a desert-like environment where yellow-spotted lizards and rattlesnakes live. There is hardly any water, and it never rains. This makes it very difficult to live there and makes it difficult to dig holes, because the ground is so hard. God's Thumb is located on top of a mountain. Not only is there fresh water, but it is much cooler (higher altitude) on top of the mountain, and there is shade. Because there is a spring of water up on the mountain, plants, like onions, can grow. There are insects and tall grasses. It was the perfect place for Stanley and Zero to take refuge. 2. How did Stanley change physically and on the inside from the beginning of the book to the end (pre-Camp Lake to post Camp Lake). Physically: Stanley arrived to Camp Green Lake overweight and soft/weak. After digging several holes and eating less food, he became thinner. His hands became calloused and his arms strong. On the Inside: Stanley arrived to C.G.L. and wanted to fit in with the other boys. He was self-conscious, and, earlier at school, he had let himself be bullied and made fun of, without sticking up for himself. In order to fit in with the boys at Camp Green Lake he: pushed another boy, ignored Zero (put him down), gives what he finds to X-Ray, lied about the sunflower seeds to cover for Magnet, and is very influenced by what the other boys think of him. He craves acceptance. At the end, Stanley realizes through getting to know Zero, that Zero (Hector) really isn't a nobody but a real friend and actually pretty intelligent. Zero/Hector even saves Stanley's life! One of the lessons Stanley learns is that it is more important to stick with your values, to respect everyone, and not to blame others for what happens in his life.
