1. Why did the war with Spain start? War with Spain started because Cuba was fighting for its independence. The U.S. sent a ship to protect their people/businesses in Cuba, but it was blown up. Spain was blamed. 2. Why did the war in the Philippines start? Filipinos were rebelling against Spanish rule. The U.S. helped defeat the Spanish, promising the Philippines independence. But in the end, Spain sold the Philippines to the U.S. The Philippines fought back and many were killed. 3. Who were the Rough Riders? Name one of them. With camera and notepad in hand, Jacob Riis entered the crowded tenements of New York City and began to expose the realities of immigrant life. His pictures, later published into a book, entitled How the Other Half Lives, brought about such an awareness to the richer city dwellers that they were shocked to find that people actually lived in those horrible conditions. This led to many reforms being passed, and the community taking ownership of cleaning up their city and pushing for change. What about today? Could a picture be used to compel people to action? TASK: Research an invention, person or event (pick from the list below!) and create a green-screen presentation to teach the class about it. *Choose to work by yourself or with a partner.
