(Know the bold words) Central American History (in brief): 1. Maya thrive and disappear mysteriously! 2. Europeans (Spanish) arrive They want plantations to grow tobacco and sugarcane. 3. In 1821, countries declare independence. Panama declares independence in 1903 (from Colombia) Belize becomes independent from Britain in 1981. 4. Banana Republics support the economies. Banana Republic: economy and government based around 1 crop (bananas) 5. United Fruit Company makes railroads but poor people don’t like that some people are richer than others. 6. Mid to Late 1900s, fighting in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. 7. Lots of Culture; Catholic and Indian traditions mix isthmus: a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land masses archipelago: a group of islands The Caribbean Islands History (in brief) 1. 1492: Christopher Columbus thinks he sailed to India. 2. Wrong! But Spanish, Dutch, English, and Danish establish colonies here 3. Sugarcane plantations-many Indians die of disease! 4. So, Europeans take slaves from Africa. 5. 1804: Toussaint-L’Ouverture frees slaves in Haiti and gain independence from France! 1844: Dominican Republic indep from Haiti 1902: Cuba free from Spain then bought by U.S. 1942 and after: others become independent Some are being ruled by other countries and they don’t care. 6. Most people are African/European or mixed. Spanish, English, French, Dutch Creole (dialect of French spoken in Haiti); just one example of languages mixing |
