Know the following terms: -estuary: a partially enclosed body of water where freshwater mixes with salty seawater (ex: the Rio de Plata connecting to the Atlantic Ocean) -soil exhaustion: when soil has lost its nutrients and can't grow plants anymore -deforestation: clearing of trees -megacity: giant urban area that includes surrounding cities and suburbs -favela: Brazilian slums -gauchos: Argentine cowboys -informal economy: odd jobs that people do without getting taxed -landlocked: surrounded by land without direct access to the ocean Be familiar with these facts: -Amazon River = the largest river system in the world; humid tropical climate -Atlantic South America is made up of rivers, plateaus, and plains and provides a LOT of mineral and energy resources -Brazil got its independence from Portugal, and they speak Portuguese. They are Roman Catholic, and have a large Japanese population -Paraguay is rural, and Uruguay is more urban (city). -Argentina's capital = Buenos Aires -Portugual claimed Uruguay before the Spanish, so some people still speak Portuguese there. -European immigration, ranching traditions, and large urban populations all affect Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay today.
