Dear sixth graders, This week we've been talking about some heavy topics as we examine current crises in the Middle East, particularly with the Syrian War and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Thank you for your engagement in the discussion and for your honest and thoughtful questions. These are difficult topics to wrestle with and often it is easy to leave with a sense of hopelessness. However, we don't examine world news as the non-Christians do, but rather with hope that one day God will redeem the world. Jesus is coming again! We have hope through Jesus' resurrection and promise! 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 We know that God allows certain events to happen because He is working history out for His divine purpose. Romans 8:28, Philippians 2:9-11 We also know that God loves the world so passionately that He wants everyone to come to know Him through Jesus. So it is so important that we pray for leaders around the world. 1 Timothy 2:1-3 So what is the Christ-follower to do about crises in the news? -Pray. -Learn more about the issue so you can pray specifically for the people involved. -Spread awareness of the situation to your friends, family, social networks: make sure you are well informed and don't spread rumors but the truth (check reliable news sites to make sure your facts are right before sharing them) -Read the Bible and learn more about God's heart for the nations and how He wants His chosen people to act in crisis situations or how we are to treat others (Isaiah 61:1; Psalm 82:3; James 1:27) -Donate money to a trustworthy Christian organization who is helping in that area. World Vision and Compassion International do a great job as describing specifically what money is needed for. International Justice Mission that works to protect the poor in developing nations. "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed." Isaiah 61:1 "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." James 1:27 “Give justice to the poor and the orphan; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute." Psalm 82:3 Watch these videos to prepare for class and fill out the Video Response Form (due Friday!). Make sure you fill out every question and hit submit! Email your responses to [email protected] if the form is not working or click on the LINK here. Turkey **please do not attempt these stunts at home** Israel Syria, Lebanon and Jordan will be discussed more in class. |
